For starters, this program has extensive help, history, science, and
threat files within the game, like a story. Well, it is a story and someone went to a lot
of trouble to make the story complete. You control 2 unmanned probes, and a mothership.
Did I forget to mention this is an asteroid type game? It also has a HUD [heads up
display] oh oh I'm in trouble-a HUD and asteroids at the same time? I can't cope!
You can change which ship you're in control of and where the view is from, you can change
your ship's orientation [when do we have time to shoot asteroids!] And just to make you
nervous when you start, if you read Mission, you will be told by the time you get to
asteroid field, sweeper ships will have set up containment fields around the asteroid to
contain the debris, AND your weapons only work when you are inside the containment field
with the asteroid. Don't forget to watch out for enemy fire, the bad guys have set up
bases on some of the asteroids. Are you worried yet?
One more thing I forgot to mention; this program is 3-D, I mean really 3-D. Not being used
to controlling my movements with the mouse, [cause it's so sensitive] I can't play this
game for too long yet. I over correct way too much, and I was getting sea-sick. [however,
I saw in the movie Space Camp that this is normal when you're first learning to fly with a
joystick-and in this case the mouse is much more sensitive. Once you are inside the
containment grid [ray tracing of what looks like a REAL complicated buckyball] you will
get a very quiet, non-intrusive green dot as a 'target acquisition' symbol; the REALLY
hard part is dodging the asteroid debris that bounces behind you. I couldn't spin fast
enough to even see what was getting me, [well I could, but I have it on good authority
that projectile vomiting can damage computer screens]. It may take me a while to learn to
swoop around that fast, but you shouldn't have that problem, [unless of course most
amusement park rides, including the merry-go-round make you sick-in which case your with
me. Motion sickness can be overcome!]
Trust me. This program is a keeper. The graphics are fantastic, the game is great and you
can't beat the price with a stick. Even if you HATED asteroids, you should download this
program and try it. Check out what happened when 3-D graphics and asteriods met! [oh that
sounds like a Japenese movie, doesn't it?] I think you'll be playing with this one for
quite some time to come.
