What is a Cryptogram, you ask?
As the author of the software puts it: "Cryptograms are texts, sayings, quotations, mottoes, adages, aphorisms, limericks, poems, proverbs, maxims, etc. Often the source author is indicated following the text. The writing is "hidden" by a code system whereby letters are substituted for each letter in the original. For example, "people" may be coded as "abcadb"."
To solve a cryptogram, you look for patterns, length of words, letter combinations, word endings and beginnings, and punctuation. All are clues to the actual letters and words. As you correctly "guess" a few of the letters and substitute, recognizable words begin to appear from the partially decoded text.
For example you have "guessed" two of the letters in a four-letter word and you have XhaX, where X still has to be found. The word is obviously "that", and the unknown coded letter is now known to b e a t. You substitute the letter t. Now more partial words become recognizable as full words.
Statistics may also help, for example the letter "E" is the most common letter followed by "T", "A" and "O". The 5 vowels cover 40 % of all text. "LNRST" account for 30%, "JKQZ" for 2 % and the rest for 28%.
The software title, Cryptographer is designed to allow you to create and solve these puzzles using deductive logic and thinking skills. This is a somewhat unique style of puzzler, as I have not see n many titles like this before.
The Software is a quick, 5-10 minute zip file. It installs very easily and runs extremely well in all versions of Windows and only crashed once in Windows 2000 (pretty good eh?)
Basically, if you are a puzzler fan, and you want to try out something different, then you really should download this one! Its both unique and intriguing.
